Stream Vicon Evoke characters into Unreal Engine 5

This page covers how to stream Vicon Evoke characters into Unreal Engine.

Prerequisites

To Stream Vicon Evoke characters into Unreal Engine 5, ensure you have set up and installed the following components:

  • 1 x PC with Vicon software (Shogun) installed
  • 1 x PC with Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) installed
  • The PCs are connected via LAN
  • Vicon Live Link Datastream plugin is installed and enabled on Unreal Engine 5 (see Install and set up Live Link)
  • An Unreal Engine 5 project is open

Set up Evoke character

  1. In Evoke, ensure the subject is created and calibrated.
  2. Make a note of the subject name.

If preferred, you can use the Hat and BackStrap Smart Object Template instead of a backpack and an HMD. These are found in the Contents Browser.

To set up Live Link, use one of the methods described in Connect to Vicon Datastream.

Set up the character

To set up a character, see Create Animation Blueprint for a body.

Be sure to use the Evoke sample FBX as the character FBX.

Check the animation at runtime

The animation is now streaming onto the character as seen in the preview window. The next step is to check the animation is still streaming at runtime.

  1. Locate the Animation Blueprint that was created in the previous step.
  2. Click and drag the Asset from the Content Browser directly into the level.

  3. On the tool bar at the top, click Play and observe the animation data streaming onto the character.

Package the project

  1. To package a project, follow the steps found in Packaging a project.
  2. Launch the executable.
