Install Vicon IR lights
To safely install and connect your Vicon IR lights, complete the following procedures:
Review the safety information
Before you begin installing your Vicon IR lights, note the following safety information.
Warning
To reduce the risk of strangulation, if the flexible cabling connected to the Vicon IR light cabling is within arm's reach, ensure that the cabling is effectively fixed to the nearest structure.
Caution
IR Light (850nm)
EN62471 Risk Group 0 (Exempt). This product emits infrared light. Do not stare directly at the source when in operation.
Caution
Ensure all tests are undertaken by a qualified, trained engineer. Ensure safe working practices are followed at all times
Insulation class
The IR light is Class III for insulation.
Mount the Vicon IR lights
Number of lights
We recommend that, whatever the size of your capture area, to ensure even illumination, you use 8 lights.
For 30–90 Hz tracking, reduce the brightness of the lights to 45%; for rates 90–120 Hz, use the maximum brightness of 90% and increase the shutter duration. For information on how to set the brightness, see Set the brightness of the Vicon IR lights in Getting started with your Vicon Markerless system.
Vicon IR lights are supplied with a mounting bracket at the bottom of the unit, incorporating a ¼” UNC-20 fitting. Mounting brackets for this fitting may be purchased separately.
A fixed lens is fitted to the IR light for safety.
Fix the Vicon IR lights to a wall, pole or camera mount and/or bracket, using a ¼” UNC 20 bolt.
Important
- Ensure the light is rated to provide required viewing distances and select the correct angle.
- Ensure the light is orientated in the correct direction.
Caution
To avoid overexposure when a subject is close to the camera, do not mount the Vicon Vanguard cameras close to the IR light sources.
Ensure the IR lights are distributed around the volume, with a light on either side of the volume corners and point each light towards the area that is to be illuminated.
Adjust the vertical position of each light to ensure the full field of view is illuminated.
Supplied bracketry
The bracketry supplied with your Vicon IR lights is as shown in the following image (dimensions rounded to the nearest mm):
Connect the cables
The Vicon IR light is supplied with:
- Terminated Ethernet cable (Cat 5 or better) with a Cat 5 RJ45 adapter, which is supplied loose (that is, not fitted).
- Terminated RCA signal cable
Both cables are permanently fitted to the light. Extension solutions for both may be required for installation.
Important
Do not attempt to replace the external cables. If a cable is damaged and you cannot shorten and re-use the cable, do not power the light.
Connect lights to power source
Use standard Cat 5 Ethernet cable or better (these cables are yellow if supplied by Vicon). For Cat 5 wiring, use T568-B wiring standard.
Ensure that only a Vicon-approved rated source is used.
- Attach the fixed (Ethernet) IR light cable to a Cat 5 Ethernet extension cable using the adapter provided in the IR light's packaging.
- Connect the extension cable to the power source (via a supplied PoE injector).
Ensure a good connection is made between the RJ45 connector on the Ethernet cable and the adapter.
PoE power
The status indicator LED turns green when the Vicon IR light is connected to the supplied PoE injector and power is enabled.
The IR illuminating LEDs turn on when the Vicon IR light is connected to the supplied PoE injector, power is enabled and a signal received from the signal cable (see Connect lights to Vicon Lock).
Important
- Ensure PoE equipment is suitably rated.
- Ensure Cat 5 cable and RCA (signal) cable are correctly terminated.
Check status indicator LED
A status indicator LED is visible on the base of the Vicon IR light.
When power is applied to the light, the status indicator LED on the base of the Vicon IR light turns green.
Important
The Vicon IR light is a fixed set up. Do not attempt to make any changes (other than physical movement) to the lights.
Connect lights to Vicon Lock
- Attach the fixed RCA signal cable to an RCA extension cable.
- Connect the RCA extension cable to the Vicon Lock unit.
The maximum cable length is 100 m (328”) without boosting power.
Reset the Vicon IR lights
If you need to reset a Vicon IR light, turn off the PoE power supply and then turn it on again.
