What's new in Vicon Evoke 1.6?

About the latest release of Evoke

Evoke 1.6 is the sixth point release of the Vicon software that controls Vicon’s Origin system.

It includes new features such as an updated user interface, a new System Health Report panel, support for Vicon Valkyrie cameras, video preview mode to help with camera setup and additional templates for characters from clusters. In addition, this release addresses a number of issues.

For a more detailed description of these additions and improvements, see New features in Vicon Evoke 1.6.

New features in Evoke 1.6

Evoke 1.6 includes the following new features.

Updated user interface

To improve its usability, Evoke 1.6 features an updated user interface that offers a more streamlined and consistent experience. This includes a refresh of Evoke's panels, controls and the icons used to provide feedback on the status of your system, devices and tracked objects or subjects.

As part of the changes in the user interface and general usability and performance improvements, some of the familiar panels in Evoke have changed. The following table summarizes some of the more notable changes.

Panel Enables you to Evoke 1.5 controls Evoke 1.6 controls
Camera Calibration panel Mask, calibrate and configure the volume origin Multiple sections for each operation

Operations are grouped into like categories, eg, Set Volume Origin, Set Floor Plane, Set Floor Extent and Auto Number Cameras are grouped into Volume Setup.

Tracking panel View lists of tracking subjects and change their properties Subject filter buttons at the top of the panel, subjects listed in same section No filter buttons; instead subjects are split into categorized sections.
Tracking Setup panel (new) Create and modify subjects Tracking setup (including subject creation and setup) was part of the Tracking panel.

Tracking setup (including creating and modifying objects and characters) is displayed in the Tracking Setup panel.

Data Capture panel and Capture panel Control captures, including naming, triggering and specifying the type of data to capture

Data Capture and Capture controls were displayed in separate panels.

Data capture controls are displayed at the bottom of the Capture panel.

Review panel (new) Select captured data to review, and control related options, including location of files and type of data to review Review functionality was available in the Capture panel. Review functionality is available in a separate Review panel.

For more information about Evoke's layout, panels and controls, see Get to know Evoke in the Vicon Evoke User Guide.

System Health Report panel

The new System Health Report panel consolidates existing key metrics into a single, easy-to-understand format to help you monitor and evaluate overall system performance. It also provides visibility into cameras currently undergoing healing processes.

The default view of the System Health Report features multiple category headers which help provide a quick glimpse of the current system performance. Each category is expandable so that you can access more granular information about the metrics presented in its header. The metrics in each category are presented either as a discrete value at the current frame or as a thumbnail displaying a trend of recent data in a specified time window.

All metrics presented in the System Health Report can be monitored in the app and accessed remotely via the API (see Vicon Evoke API & automation).

For more information about the System Health Report, see Understand the System Health Report in the Vicon Evoke User Guide.

Valkyrie camera support

Evoke 1.6 supports the following variants of Vicon's new flagship camera, Valkyrie, as well as all variants of Vantage, Vero, and Viper cameras.

  • Valkyrie VK26, with a resolution of up to 26.2 megapixels (5120 x 5120) and full frame rate capture speed of 150 fps
  • Valkyrie VK16, with a resolution of up to 16.1 megapixels (5120 x 3152) and full frame rate capture speed of 240 fps

Valkyrie cameras can be used alongside Vantage, Vero, Vue or Viper/ViperX cameras.

Notes

  • Evoke performs a more precise lens calibration when a Valkyrie camera is present in the system. In this case, you cannot load any saved camera calibration file into previous versions of Evoke.
  • Due to their high resolution, Valkyrie cameras are not recommended for use in systems that include virtual reality headsets as this may result in sub-optimal latency performance. For more information about compatible hardware, contact Vicon Support.

Video Preview Mode for camera setup

When setting up Valkyrie cameras with Evoke, you can select Video Preview Mode (30–900Hz) to assist with volume setup and to check space coverage. Vantage, Vero and Viper also support video preview mode but only 30–60Hz (see Video Preview Mode frame rates in the Vicon Evoke User Guide).

Note also that, for effective use of this mode, strobeless cameras (Vipers) need independent illumination at a wavelength of 850nm.

Video Preview Mode displays a video image from the optical sensor of Vicon cameras that support this mode. All other camera views and parameters are inactive.

Note

Video Preview mode is for system setup purposes only. You cannot use Video Preview mode when you are calibrating, auto masking, capturing, or reviewing data.

For more information, see Check volume coverage in the Vicon Evoke User Guide.

Alternative templates for characters from clusters

Evoke 1.6 includes new templates for characters from clusters, for use without a backpack. For these templates, the spine cluster is attached to the hip bone of the solving skeleton, which improves the stability of the hip pose.

The following two variants are provided. They require a different mount position for the spine cluster:

  • ClusterTemplateBelt Mount the spine cluster on a belt, in line with the spine.
  • ClusterTemplateWaist Mount the spine cluster on a strap around the narrowest part of the waist, in line with the spine.

For illustrations of the mount positions for the spine cluster for the new templates, see Prepare the participants in the Vicon Evoke User Guide.

When using the new character templates, create the spine cluster with the normal Pulsar smart object template.

When the spine cluster is mounted on a backpack or the Vicon-supplied backstrap, continue to use the original character template ClusterTemplate, in conjunction with the appropriate smart object template.

For information on setting up character solving, see Create characters in the Vicon Evoke User Guide.
