Vicon Vanguard Reference Guide

About this guide

This guide provides reference information and technical specifications for Vicon Vanguard cameras.

It is intended for those using Vicon Vanguard cameras in a Vicon Markerless system to track and capture movement in a variety of locations and applications. No previous experience with Vicon Markerless systems is assumed.

In this guide:

About Vicon Markerless systems

Vicon Markerless systems can be used to track and analyze movement in a variety of locations and applications, mainly in the entertainment industry:

  • Game development: Prototyping and evaluation of in-game character motions, enabling rapid iteration and testing of motion snippets without the need for lengthy booking and scheduling of traditional motion capture sessions.

  • Visual Effects (VFX): Previsualization (previz) processes in film, television, and game cinematics, where the ability to quickly experiment with different shots, block scenes involving multiple characters, and identify potential issues can significantly reduce production costs and facilitate effective communication of the directorial vision.

  • Virtual Reality (VR): Location-based VR experiences, where real-time, full-body tracking is essential for immersive and engaging multi-player environments, and rapid participant setup is crucial for high throughput and operational efficiency.

Vicon provides clear guidance through documentation and on-site user training prior to use of Markerless systems. Post-installation training, online and personal technical support is also provided.

Intended users of Vicon Markerless systems

Vicon Vicon Markerless systems (including Vicon Vanguard cameras) are for animation directors, game developers and technicians in animation studios, production facilities and virtual production environments and also VR developers and companies creating immersive VR experiences.

As Vicon Markerless systems require no expert knowledge (so you don't need to know where to position markers or guide subjects through a range of motion, etc), this guide assumes only that you have access to the necessary components (see Vicon Markerless system components) and a suitable site for system assembly and use. It provides technical reference information about Vicon Markerless systems.
